The Hiraeth Pit is the second full-length album by Denver, Colorado-based sludge/doom metal band Deer Creek, released on May 18, 2024, through Game Two Records. The album, available in a limited-edition Digipak CD format, features seven tracks: “Bodies to Be Kicked,” “The Wretches Who Grovel,” “Crushed by the Hand Slowly Filling with Gold,” “They Were Buried Yesterday,” “Grey,” “We Dreamed of Flames and Suffocation,” and “Almshouse Stench,” with a total runtime of 38 minutes. Recorded and mixed at Crash Pad Studios by Bart McCrorey in February and May 2023, and mastered by Chris Gresham at Ember Audio Productions in August 2023, the album showcases Deer Creek’s signature bleak, heavy, and melodic sludge doom sound. Formed in 2002, the band—consisting of Paul Vismara (guitars, vocals), John Deer (drums), Conan Hultgren (guitars, vocals), and Stephanie Hopper (bass)—builds on their 2022 debut Menticide with this release, exploring themes of existential despair and the Welsh concept of “hiraeth” (a longing for a lost place or state). The album is also available on black/blue colored vinyl (limited to 250 copies) and for digital download in high-quality 24-bit/48kHz format via Bandcamp.Â
